Employers with more than 250 staff may be required to publish their parental leave and pay policies.

The government has announced that it will launch a consultation on the proposal, which it believes will allow job applicants to make informed decisions about whether they can combine the role with caring for their family.

Making the announcement, Business Secretary Greg Clark explained that, while many employers go further than the legal minimum for parental leave and pay, very few publish their policies openly. Applicants must ask prospective employers what the position is which many are reluctant to do for fear of discrimination.

The move follows an announcement by 10 big-name firms that they would publish their parental pay and leave policies online.

Greater transparency has been advocated by MP Jo Swinson, who would like all large firms to be open about their leave policies.
