It would appear that HMRC have solved the UK’s debt problem by passing responsibility on to a Mr Hembrough who works as a railway signal tester near Bristol Temple Meads.
One morning Mr Hembrough opened his post, on returning from a drink at the pub, to find he had been specially selected to receive a tax bill of £14,301,369,864,489.03.
In case you struggle with the figure, it amounts to over £14 trillion, more than the net worth of the American economy.
History does not record whether he went straight back down the pub for another drink.
The letter from HMRC went on to say: "Although we are changing your tax code you may still not pay enough tax by 5 April 2017”.
