HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has revealed that over 5.6 million people have used the HMRC app since 6 April 2025 – and it’s proving the perfect conversation starter for money matters across generations.
This year’s theme, ‘start the conversation’, couldn’t be more timely. Whether its grandparents explaining National Insurance to teenage grandchildren, parents checking Child Benefit eligibility, or siblings comparing State Pension forecasts, the HMRC app brings tax and financial information into everyday family chats – securely, instantly, and in plain English (or Cymraeg).
The Numbers Tell the Story
Since the new tax year began, the app has seen remarkable engagement:
- 4.14 million users checked their pay before it hit their bank account via Pay As You Earn (PAYE)
- 1.94 million viewed their annual tax summary
- 1.79 million looked up or saved their National Insurance number
- 1.49 million checked their State Pension forecast
- 1.19 million managed Self-Assessment summaries and payments
These aren’t just statistics – they represent real people taking control of their financial lives.
One App, Every Generation
Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Chief Customer Officer, sums it up:
“It’s not always easy talking about finances, especially between generations. As part of Talk Money Week, we’re encouraging families to lean into talking about money. From budgeting tips to tax basics, the HMRC app makes it easy to access tax information and kick-start those important conversations.”
The app is designed for everyone:
