The Adjudicator’s Office rules on HMRC and forms the ombudsman to tax payers and Company’s should there be reason to complain or question decisions and claims made. The office has however recently confirmed they are dealing with a huge backlog of cases and in some cases it can be over a year to reach conclusion.
The office has confirmed the majority of outstanding cases are based on shock tax demands when workers are told they have either underpaid National Insurance and income tax or been overpaid tax credits and that the backlog currently sits at 1,028 cases.
It was also confirmed by the Adjudicator’s Office settled just 970 in 2015-16 — half the 1,850 that were dealt with the year before. They also confirmed while more than half of cases were dealt with in six months, and most within a year, 66 waited for more than a year.
