The government has launched its ‘Check your pay’ campaign to encourage employers and those on low wages to check the right pay is being awarded.

The campaign urges employers to ensure they are paying the correct amount by reminding them of the current National Minimum Wage (NMW) and National Living Wage rates, and highlighting common pitfalls.

“Even if you are paying your employees at or above the National Living or Minimum Wage, you could still be underpaying them. This can easily happen when an employer makes a mistake in calculating pay,” states the campaign.

Common errors include: whether tips are counted as part of pay; whether employees are paid for travelling for work; whether deductions for work wear or tools are considered; and when employees get older and fall into a new NMW band.

The advice states that if you have been paying below the correct minimum wage, you must pay any arrears immediately.

"I've booked the HR and Payroll Update course most years and during roles with at least 3 different employers. One thing remains the same; a course that is relevant, well delivered and enjoyable and that is key when trying to retain the many pieces of legislation changes to which payroll professionals are exposed."
