One in four employees (24%) say that they would rather have a higher rate of pay and fewer breaks at work, according to research commissioned by workplace rating website Glassdoor.

The survey of 2,000 working adults in the UK, carried out by UK OnePoll, also found seven in ten (70%) take less than an hour for lunch, and the average lunch break across the UK lasts just 31 minutes.

Two-fifths of employees (40%) say they would rather have reduced working hours so they could come in to work late or leave early, instead of a designated lunch break. Over one third (35%) would prefer the flexibility to take a break whenever they wanted so that they have control over their day.

John Lamphiere, EMEA managing director at Glassdoor, said: “It seems like greater flexibility in working hours or higher pay would be far more preferable to most employees than a traditional hour-long lunch break.

"I know it is not till next June but just booked on The Payroll Centre's Annual conference. This is my must do course/conference of the year, having been almost every year for 10+ years, only missing for my wedding and having a baby, I even went one year with a 3 month old in tow! "
