There has been a detailed study by RAND Europe and their research has found that sleep deprivation is resulting in a level of absence from work that equates to over 200,000 lost working days in a year which is costing the economy of the UK approximately £40 billion a year. This also equated to a far higher mortality risk where employees aren’t sleeping enough.
The mortality risk was 13% higher for someone sleeping on average less than 6 hours per night in comparison to someone sleeping between seven and nine hours which is considered to be a healthy daily sleep. The research showed that just by increasing the sleep time from six to seven hours per night on average could increase the UK economy by around £24 billion.
